This morning when I was at the gym on the eliptical machine, having what I believe to be my best work out ever...although I was listening to heart pounding, fast paced music - I was watching Animal Planet Dogs 101. The first half was about large and small dogs - the pros and cons of each. The 2nd half was about dogs that rescued their owners.
The first story they told was of an older gentleman that had just had shoulder surgery. He had decided to go for a swim and he unexpectedly went under and couldn't get up to the surface to get air. As he evisioned himself drowning, he felt something sweep under his shoulder like a torpedo thrusting, he realized it was one of his dogs, he threw his arms around the dogs neck and yelled "swim, swim, swim"...before he knew it, he was at the shore, safe! He looked around, worried that perhaps his other dog had drown because he didn't see or here it. Then he spotted his other dog, in a foot of water, looking at him as though he had left the dog while he went swimming! Everyone was safe and sound! (side note - as I'm watching this, reading the closed captions - tears are streaming down my face!)
The 2nd story was about a house fire in Alaska. A police officer was trying to go to an address where a fire was reported but while on his way, his GPS system lost signal and he didn't know where to go. All of the sudden, in the dark of night, he saw a dog running around in circles in the middle of the road ahead. It was obvious the dog was trying to get his attention. He decided to follow the dog (a German Shepard), for several miles (as caught on police car cam!) until they reached a house that was burning down. The police officer called the fire department and gave them directions on how to get there and although the dogs owner had second degree burns, he was alive because his dog had saved his life! (again -- tears streaming down my face). Here is the link if you would like to see the police video.
There are heros amoung us. Keep your eyes open for them and if you have an opportunity, be one!
Several months back I made the mistake of letting my dog outside without a leash at my mom's place. She lives in town, on a busy street. It was dusk, so visability was't great. A guy was walking his dog on the opposite side of the street, so my 20 lb black and tan Daschund by the name of Gipper, started barking and immediately charged for the opposite side of the street! A car was coming in the near lane, at about 25-30 mph, the guy walking the dog on the opposite side of the street saw that my dog was heading toward the road and ultimately would run out in front of the car that was coming. The guy ran in front of the car and held his hand out to stop the car. The car stopped 3 feet short of the guy...and my dog, which would have been run over, was safe. I didn't see the guys face, but I thainked him as he slipped away in the night.
Truly, there are heros amoung us.
