Dogs love treadmills? Mine do!

Although I have a gym membership there are some days when I just find it easier to not leave the house and simply hop on the treadmill. I have two treadmills, one that I got free and found out that it wouldn't support my weight! That one is used for my lovely dogs; Ginger and Gipper! Today when I decided to hop on the treadmill, I put Gipper on the dog treadmill (hooked with a leash) at 2 miles per hour at a level 2 incline. I hopped on the other treadmill at 3.5 mph as Ginger looked on from about 3 feet away. Ginger appeared content as she watched us but then she decided to hop up to my treadmill heading the wrong direction so she went right off the back! A bit surprised I initially stopped the treadmill. Then to my surprise, Ginger still wanted to get up there so I put the speed at 1 mph, set her on the treadmill and I started walking in front of her. She stayed on and walked behind me for just over 5 minutes at 1 mph, with no leash at all! In time I will increase the speed and perhaps as Gipper is exercising on his treadmill, Ginger and I can get our workout done at the same time!  When Gipper is done with his 30 minute walk, he is so full of energy and I can tell he feels great! Tail wagging, picking up his toys from around the house, moving them to and fro!

If you have a dog and a treadmill that is collecting dust, this is absolutely something you should try. Ceasar Millan, the dog whisperer always promotes exercise, discipline, affection – in that order! I recommend trying this for any size dog. Just because you have a little dog, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need exercise. Start by hooking the leash around a stable part of the treadmill frame, above and in front of where your dog will be walking. Have your dog hop up onto the treadmill on his/her own and hook the leash to the collar. Turn the treadmill on at 1 mph and praise your dog for walking forward as the treadmill moves beneath his/her feet. As you see your dog relax and adjust to the new experience, increase the speed to 1.5 mph. In time, you will be able to increase the speed just as you are able to do that for your own workouts! A dog that has enough exercise is a happy, healthy dog! Just like you, your dog will feel better after a walk! Happy treadmilling! If you don’t have a treadmill and are interested in one for your dog, check out the dog treadmills that are available. Perfect for individuals who don’t have the time to get out and exercise fido!
